Pre-conference Interview with Lukáš Malý

Tell us about you and your company, how did you get started, and what choices led you to where you are now?

Datasys is a private Czech company active on the Czech market as a system integrator of many systems and solutions. I’ve been working at the company for five years. Early on, I was involved in the installations and implementations of EMC FileNet for important customers and only worked with the security and monitoring department when there was someone and something to monitor.

Over time, I became fully occupied with the Security and Monitoring Department. My current position at the Security and Monitoring Department fully focuses on DevOps for ELISA Log Management. I carry out ELISA installations and implementations for our customers. I also participate in the development of ELISA on the level of automation of installations, etc.

What are your biggest challenges, and could you give us some interesting statistics regarding your work?

The greatest challenge of the previous year was involvement in the Czech translation of Zabbix, carried out through Datasys. Another big challenge was the creation of a semi-automated ELISA installation. Together with my colleagues, we have created a procedure for installing Zabbix without manual post-installation configuration steps. These include importing ELISA Templates via the API, creating notification events, linking templates for the ELISA server, changing the WebGUI theme and e.g. name of severity etc.

How did you choose Zabbix to be your monitoring solution, and what about Zabbix impresses you the most?

Datasys has been a Certified Partner of Zabbix SIA for many years. And this fact was one of the main reasons to look for a new job. Zabbix is a beautifully open and very dynamic open source project that keeps expanding with interesting new features. It has a great community which creates many scripts and templates for monitoring a very wide range of device groups.

What is your history with Zabbix Conference, and could you tell us your motivation for becoming one of the speakers for this year’s event?

I’ve been following the conferences from their beginning. Every year, I watch the videos and look at the presentations to learn a lot of useful information. This will be my first year when I’ll be present in person. One colleague asked, “why not share our ELISA at the Zabbix conference?”.

What would be the key message of your presentation, and what do you want attendees to learn from your talk?

Our ELISA solution heavily relies on Zabbix. We have been using it for a long time and because of our familiarity decided to use it for log management for NXLog agents. The objective is to create a comprehensive and inexpensive system for SIEM using familiar and powerful open source components.

To some extent, we modify the Zabbix Frontend in order to use Zabbix as a monitoring tool, but also a configuration tool for the IT infrastructure, monitored and greatly expanded with logging information (Syslog, File log, MS Eventlog).

In your opinion, what are the main advantages and reasons for joining the upcoming Zabbix Conference 2016?

The main reason is to share with the community the many possible uses of Zabbix. There are many Configuration Management systems, but we integrated many functions together. Zabbix + ELK + NXlog = ELISA

What topics you look forward to discussing with Zabbix community, conference participants and Zabbix team?

Zabbix 3.0 has brought in many innovations such as encryption which I haven’t had the opportunity to try yet. I’ll be happy to discuss this topic with others. I’m also looking forward to presentations about the Docker.
